Rivers have been navigated since ancient times. Before the introduction of railroads and highways, rivers were the arteries of the world’s transportation.

Early river migrations were powered by keel, oar, tow ropes, paddles, sails, and river currents. Eventually, steam-powered riverboats were introduced. These vessels allowed the navigation of rivers both up and downstream and ushered in a new era of river transportation. As new technology rapidly developed in the 20th century, river cruising grew in ease, comfort, and popularity. Travelers were happy to explore new territory, impossible to see on an ocean cruise liner, in an intimate small-ship setting. In the past 10 years, river and small-ship cruising continues to boom, and the reasons for the growing interest are abundant.
